Natural and organic skincare has been at the forefront of my life for decades. In the early days products were quite hard to come by and I made a lot of my own. These days there are loads of fabulous natural and organic skincare products available, and with some really effective ingredients.

I’m always on the look out for new companies and products to try out and recently discovered Evolve Organic Beauty. I purchased a few of their products to try out and the first under review is their African Orange Aromatic Lotion.

Evolve Organic Beauty

Evolve Organic Beauty are a small company based in a wind powered eco-studio in Hertfordshire who make all their natural skincare products by hand in small batches.

All their products are vegan, cruelty free and eco-friendly. They use organic ingredients wherever possible (giving them a 5* rating in my books) and ensure that they are all sustainably resourced, biodegradable and GMO free.

Their product packaging is recyclable and they have recently introduced a unique form of grass paper packaging for their cartons which is fully compostable. Additionally, all their labels and printing are done with non toxic soy and vegetable based inks.

Evolve Organic Beauty have won an impressive array of awards over the years and have a great range of products from skin and body care to hair care, and all at very reasonable prices.

I am a complete sucker for anything with orange essential oil in it so this hand and body lotion was a no brainer for me.

The lotion comes in a recyclable brown container with a pump dispenser. It contains a generous 250ml of product (8.5 fl oz) and is made from 99% natural ingredients and is 91% organic.

It has a basic style label but gives all the information and details that you need, but it may not be your cup of tea if you are looking for ultra glamorous packaging and products to display in your bathroom.

Nevertheless, I quite like it and the style is growing on me, especially as I now have quite a few of their products hanging around my bathroom shelves.

The main moisturising ingredients in African orange aromatic lotion are:

Sunflower Oil - a light oil but with great moisturising properties and easily absorbed

Shea Butter - a rich, creamy butter with excellent skin conditioning and healing properties

Cacao Butter - great for softening and hydrating

Glycerin - for moisturising and softening

Olive Oil - great for dry, chapped and sensitive skins

Linseed Oil - also known as flax oil, great for healing skin and boosting cell regeneration

The lotion also contains orange (good for dry skin), cedarwood (healing), black pepper (good for sore muscles) and bergamot (healing) essential oils and some styrax benzoin extract (great for redness and itching) which also gives a mild vanilla aroma. The overall scent is a mild citrus/vanilla, not quite as strong on the orange front as I was expecting, but still very nice.

How to use Evolve African orange aromatic lotion

You should never use a body moisturiser or oil on dry skin. Always wash or shower first and apply the product to damp skin. Not only does this get rid of any dead cells, oil and dirt that have accumulated, it will also allow you to seal some water in to your skin.

Apply one pump of lotion to your hands and apply to the body. Use liberally and massage in gently, using a little more on dry areas if required.

Beauty Tip
If you have a lot of dry or rough skin, exfoliate your body in the bath or shower before using Evolve Beauty African orange aromatic lotion. I find one of the best tools to use, and the least messy, is a pair of exfoliating gloves. You can do your whole body really quickly and easily this way, just add a little soap or shower gel to the gloves and off you go!

Evolve Beauty African orange aromatic lotion – overall review

I use this body lotion after a shower and apply liberally. The product spreads well and sinks in nicely without leaving a greasy residue and you can get dressed straight away. I love putting this on after a bath in an evening and going to bed smelling like heaven!

The lotion is nicely moisturising but not too heavy and skin feels supple after using it. If you use it as a hand cream you only need a small amount to get a good softening effect, and I rub it in to each nail too to feed them with the shea and cacao butters that it contains, which helps waterproof the nails and keep them flexible. (Learn how to get fabulous nails and get them to grow faster).

I really like this product. It has a good mix of moisturising ingredients without being on the heavy side and it’s a bonus that it works on the hands as well as the body (many body lotions don’t sink in as well on the hands). The addition of some aloe vera also gives a soothing element for anyone with irritated or very dry skin.

The scent is lovely and skin stays nicely supple throughout the day, however the scent does wear off, as you would expect with essential oils, after a while. I’d definitely buy this product again. At £18 for a 250ml bottle I think it’s very good value for a 91% organic product.
